Mankind's role is to fulfil his heaven sent purpose through a sincere heart that is in harmony with all creation and loves all things.
- Morihei Ueshiba, founder of Aikido
Proper observance of etiquette is as much a part of your training as is learning the movements of Aikido. Try to be mindful of what you are doing; etiquette is a practice that needs to be done from the inside as well as in appearance in order for you to benefit from it. Keep talking in the dojo to a minimum. Helping your partner is best done with a co-operative but sincere attitude rather than with words. The teacher is best qualified to explain things - your partner might be looking at an aspect you are not. As far as possible give your partner space to practice without imposing your ideas of how things should be done on them. Practice practicing non-judgementally.
Mark Evans is the head dojo instructor for Shako Dojo. With over 25 years of experience he has trained extensively in dojos throughout the UK, Australia, and Japan, and currently holds the rank of 5th Dan black belt. He is also a senior instructor at the Aikido Goshinkai international headquarters in Byron Bay, and has been a direct student of the founder of Aikido Goshinkai, Master Williams, since 2003.
In 2010 he spent a year as soto-deshi to Taiki Okajima Sensei (10th Dan, Aikido Yuishinkai) living and training Aikido in Osaka, Japan, where he also received a 2nd Dan in Goshindo and extensive training in Sotai-Ho (body balance and relaxation).
His main emphasis in training is the understanding, and application, of the basic Aikido principles, which lead to ‘easy Aikido’ through relaxed strength. Although self defense is a key aspect in any martial art training Mark also teaches the practical application of Aikido principles in daily life.
